Week 2: a comprehensive study note on environments, building up the practice project and upcoming data talks
We're about to finish Checkpoint 1 and there was some exciting new content this week
Part of the “Mastering dbt” series. Access to the full Study Guide. Let’s connect on LinkedIn!
I aim for these updates to come out on Fridays, but this one is a little bit late because I was very busy last week trying to get tickets to see Oasis in Dublin. I am only human, ay!
But it was far from being an uneventful week 2 for our Study for the dbt Analytics Engineering Certification with me series.
For starters, we reached 100 subs and I can only thank everyone for sharing their own journey with me on LinkedIn. Lots of amazing connections are being created and it’s really exciting and motivating!

New study notes added
This week, I added only one study note, but I must say it is a very comprehensive post on the basics of environments, CD/CI jobs, and branching strategies.
I went full on ELI5 (explain it like I’m 5) because, although I had some experience with these concepts in a working environment, I felt like I lacked the foundational understanding of them. This post also includes some excellent resources for those needing an intro to GitHub.
A full list of the study notes available is in the main post.
Building up our practice project
I did work on another very exciting post outlining our practice project, but I still need to fine-tune it so it will be one for next week.
Basically, I will be detailing the practice tasks for each checkpoint and sharing a very realistic dataset we can work with. Stay tuned!
Recommended data talks (including one with me!)
Attending data talks online is very effective in keeping you motivated, expanding your network, and staying up to date with the latest developments.
I would like to recommend 3 data talks (1 available now and 2 in the future):
DataTalksClub held a talk with Pastor Soto, a medical student who took on side projects that led him into machine learning, and the ML Zoomcamp course served as a turning point in his career.
dbtLabs is holding a Fast track to dbt workshop which takes place online on 20th or 21st August (different sessions to suit different timezones) and it’s free to register.
If you are in Dublin, Ireland, next month, you can catch yours truly presenting this very Study Guide at the local dbt HQ. You can register for free here. I was super excited for this invitation and can’t wait to spread to word about this guide!
I would love to hear how you’ve been studying for the dbt Certified Developer Exam: share your tips, struggles, and wins in the comments!
